FLUKE Message board is online!

Hey, everyone, it's Robert, pretending to be Mary Jessica again because I cannot remember how to log in to Blogger my damn self.

Anyway, I'm here to tell you all about the exciting new FLUKE Message Board, which exists as a sub-category of my entirely useless (at this point) internet message board. Please register and use it to talk about FLUKE or anything else you want to talk about. Keep it clean, jerks!

Friday, February 02, 2007

From Robert:

Yep, we're doing this again. Same place (upstairs at Tasty World), same time (Noon - 6:00) and same people, plus a couple more. We are pleased to announce the addition of Eleanor and Drew from Little House Comics to the FLUKE Council of Elders. J. Chris from Wide Awake Press is still handling our website, which oughtta be updated soon.

Admission is still $5.00, and tables are still first come/first served, and this year we ain't letting anybody in early. Unless they're a sponsor. Sponsorship details are forthcoming. And hey, if you wanna be a sponsor, it's not too late. Email rnewsome[at]uga[dot]edu for more information on that.

The Little House people will, I hope, post more about the 2007 FLUKE book, which brings me to the 2006 FLUKE book.

The 2006 FLUKE book WILL be out soon, but it is not out yet. I know we told you guys it would be out this summer, but I'm just going to have to ask you to trust me when I say that the last 75% of calendar year 2006 was in NO WAY helpful to the publishing process for anyone involved, so it is WAY WAY late. If you pre-paid, or are a contributor, I can only promise you extra surprises when you get your books (FINALLY). This in no way makes up for the lateness, I know, but it is, at this point, the best we can do. We're sorry.

FIFTH ANNUAL FLUKE MINI-COMICS FESTIVAL 2006

Download the full text doc here: FLUKE2006.doc

This year’s FLUKE Mini-Comics Festival , sponsored by AdHouse Books, Bizarro Wuxtry, Flagpole Magazine, Happy Happy Birthday to Me Records, Inch-High Button Guy and Top Shelf Productions, will take place on Saturday, April 1 at Tasty World on 312 E. Broad Street, Athens GA from noon until 6 PM. Admission is $5.00 for all attendees. Live music will follow throughout the evening, beginning at 9 p.m.

In the past, submissions for the FLUKE anthology have been submitted weeks before the festival, and the finished product was available on the day of FLUKE with the price of admission. This year, we are inviting attendees to bring their submission for the anthology to FLUKE, and we will publish the anthology afterwards and send it out by mail this summer. Submissions will be collected at the door at Tasty World and at Bizarro Wuxtry; at both locations, there will be a sign-up sheet to list your mailing address to insure you receive a copy. The anthology is $5 (which includes the cost of postage).

In the evening, local bands Heros Severum, Cars Can Be Blue and Russian Spy Camera will perform.

FLUKE also coincides with the opening of a gallery show devoted to autobiographical comic books. The Athens Institute for Contemporary Art (ATHICA) presents: “Dear Diary: The Autobiographical Comic Book,” featuring original pages, artists’ books and multimedia from 23 local and national artists, including Los Angeles’ Johnny Ryan (“Angry Youth Comix,” www.johnnyr.com) NYC’s Vanessa Davis (“Spaniel Rage,” www.spanielrage.com) and NYC’s Raina Telgemeier (“Smile,” Scholastic’s graphic novelization of “The Baby-Sitters’ Club,” www.goraina.com), as well as local favorites Patrick Dean (www.patrickdeancomics.com) and Missy Kulik (www.missykulik.com). For a full list of artists, visit www.athica.org. The show runs April 1 –May 27; the April 1 opening is from 7-9 p.m, and the gallery is located in the Chase Street Warehouses off of Tracy Street, close to downtown and Tasty World.

PUBLICATION SUBMISSION DETAILS
As we will be mailing out FLUKE anthologies, please include your mailing address information with your submission. All work must be formatted to submit in DIGEST-SIZE (8.5 inches tall x 5.5 inches wide). We will not include submissions of mini-comics that do not follow these guidelines. While there is no firm page limit, brevity is encouraged. Please submit high-quality b & w photocopies. We will not be held responsible for any original work. The FLUKE organizers reserve all rights to accept or reject work for the FLUKE 2006 anthology.

EVENT SPECS
Tables and spaces will be provided for mini comic artists and distributors on a first-come, first-serve basis. All attendees are welcome to bring enough work to fill a small (4' x 5') table space. In the interest of providing display space for as many artists as possible, attendees may not use more than one table. Large displays and booths are not permitted at FLUKE, so please do not bring them. You will be asked to keep them in your vehicle.

FLUKE is a mini-comic festival that has been organized by Athens-area comic artists, underground publishers and their enthusiasts since 2002. Conceived as a venue for the discussion and exchange of timely ideas related to mini-comics, zines, and other independent publications, FLUKE is not a large comic convention or merchandising-saturated extravaganza. This isn't to say we don't like our share of stuff--'cause we do. However, we have kept the organization of the event as simple as possible to ensure that it remains focused on work and ideas rather than merchandising.

I really should try to remember my password...

Hi! It's Robert, pretending to be Mary Jessica again. FLUKE committee member George Tarleton just posted this over at tcj.com, and I think it's worth posting here as well:

Okay, here's what's going on...

FLUKE 2006 is not going to happen in January of next year. We've decided to push it back a bit and have the next FLUKE in March. This means we're about a hundred times less likely to have an ice storm like we did in 2005. It'll also give us alittle more time for the planning of the event, which is good because most of the FLUKE tribal council have either just moved to new houses or are about to have a baby, and these things tend to be distracting.

There's gonna be some new developments in terms of the FLUKE anthology as well. Dudes, just check in on www.flukeathens.com occasionally and we'll keep you updated.

If you're gonna be at Zine-A-Palooza in Duluth, GA on July 31stm stop by our table and say hi!

Wednesday, March 23, 2005

Like the FOREIGNER song, It's URGENT!!!

Hey, this is Robert. I'm pretending to be Mary Jessica because I forgot my user name and password for the site. We're sending out the last of the contributor copies, and I'm missing some addresses. If you are one of the following people, or if you know their mailing address, please email it to rnewsome(at)uga(dot)edu and I will mail your book to you very quickly! Thanks!

We need the addresses of:
Cameron Bogue
Addison Goedel
Rich Tomasso
Pat J.M.
Joel Priddy
Dave Merrill
Justin Colussy Estes
Kazmir Strzepek
Joel Hatmaker
M. Campos
Brad McGinty

Thanks!

Photo Links

Some More.

SUCCESS!!! and PHOTOS!

Thanks to everyone who braved the ice to attend FLUKE! It was a wonderful feeling to know that so many of you loved FLUKE enough to come and freeze your rears off. We took tons of photos, and if you'd like to see them, go here!

If anyone would like to share photos that you took of FLUKE, you can send them to maryjessicahammesATyahooDOTcom. I can't guarantee that we'll post every photo we receive, but send them in (in a reasonable size/format that you would expect Yahoo to handle)!

See you next year!

FLUKE 2005, It's ON!!!

This is Robert.
I know it says that this was posted by Mary Jessica, but it's not. I totally forgot my blogger password.

So, maybe you're wondering about FLUKE 2005 because of the total Ice Storm (not the boring one by Ang Lee) that decided to hit Athens today of all days. The weather right now isn't really all that good, and the roads are iced over and slippery, so if you're coming into Athens today, PLEASE BE VERY CAREFUL. We're going down to Tasty World at around 10:30 or 11:00 to start setting up, and we're still going through with this thing so if you can make it, please come on down.

If you need to ask directions or about the weather or about what different kinds of Kryptonite there are and the different effects of each (White Kryptonite, for instance, only affects plant matter), then please feel free to call the FLUKE 2005 ICE AGE EMERGENCY HOTLINE (my cellular telephone) at (706)-614-3499.

As far as we know, the rock show's still going on tonight, too.

The irony of all this, of course, is that it's supposed to be like 50 degrees tomorrow.

Stupid weather.

more press!

And the Athens Banner-Herald featured a story on FLUKE yesterday; read it here (free registration required).

We're extremely excited to see everyone tomorrow! Bundle up and we'll see you soon!

Wednesday, January 26, 2005

all press is good press...

...I think. Anyway, there's definitely good press for FLUKE in this week's Flagpole cover story . Thanks to the writer, Rob Walsh - good job! In the online version, there's also an interview with Flaming Fire member and Vineyland artist Lauren Weinstein. Also, there's a nice sidebar of where to get comics in Athens for all of our out-of-town visitors -though we recommend Bizarro Wuxtry above all, of course!

Tomorrow I'll link to our story that's due to come out in the Athens Banner-Herald.

Monday, January 24, 2005

almost here!

We can't wait to see you at FLUKE!

We expect some good local press this week and I'll be sure to link to the articles. Don't forget - tables are first come, first serve, and space is limited, so consider sharing a table with some friends.

See you soon!

Monday, January 10, 2005

Time's almost out for those hotel rooms!

You have until January 15 to book your room at the lovely Holiday Inn, which is the most conveniently-located hotel in town for FLUKE, at the discount rate! Time's running out! You can book online by clicking on the "Location" page on this here web site, so do it! They are super duper nice people, we promise!

Also, I thought I'd post the latest press release I sent out, to answer any of the FAQs recently coming my way. (Please note that we have since gained another sponsor, AdHouse Books, publisher of many of the fine items you will find at Wide Awake Press, courtesy of our wonderful webmaster J. Chris Campbell & company!)Here it is, enjoy!

TWO NIGHTS OF ROCK AND LOTS OF ART FOR FLUKE MINI-COMICS FESTIVAL 2005

Athens has long been known for its music and arts scenes. Witness a fiery explosion of these two arenas in a celebration of comics, zines and independent publishing!

This year’s FLUKE Mini-Comics Festival - sponsored by Alternative Comics, Bizzaro Wuxtry, Flagpole Magazine, General Jinjur, Happy Happy Birthday To Me Records and Top Shelf - will take place on Saturday, January 29th at Tasty World on 312 E. Broad Street, Athens GA from noon until 6 PM. Admission is $5.00 for all attendees. Live music and trapeze performances will follow throughout the evening, and an additional night of rock (and potluck action) will kick off the weekend Friday night, welcoming out-of-towners and locals alike to the fourth annual FLUKE.

A FLUKE meet-n-greet benefit for the Athens Recess Center will take place the evening before FLUKE, at 6 pm on Friday, January 28, at Tight Pockets, a local community space (call 706-340-0990 for directions). The evening will feature a vegan potluck and preview showcase featuring work by FLUKE exhibitors as well as live music. The entertainment, according to organizer and artist T. Edward Bak, includes: Lance Simmons, a visionary young cartoonist and soundscape artist from Alabama; 63 Crayons, a hot new local pop outfit on the recently transplanted Happy Happy Birthday To Me label (one of our sponsors); Lets Surf, epitomizing Athens DIY punk rock mayhem; and Carrie Nations, who are nothing more and nothing less than the future. They just finished a tour of the West Coast, are currently recording a follow-up to their Plan-It-X debut.

About ARC, from their own literature: The Athens Recess Center is a skill-sharing, volunteer-run, not-for-profit, non-discriminatory environment open to all, inviting Athenians to meet their neighbors and discover commonality through discussion, deliberation, education and direct democracy. ARC offers meeting space and resources for social organizations, supplies literature from voices in the margins and provides a safe space for reading, refreshment and relaxation for residents and guests of Athens, Georgia. ARC plans to offer a library, book and music store, café with coffee and vegan treats, and general space for meetings, studying and organizing.

On the evening of Saturday, January 29th, following the FLUKE festival, visitors will be treated to trapeze performances from the local Canopy trapeze studio (www.canopystudio.com) as well as live music. According to Bak, We Vs The Shark will supply hot local awesomeness on their first hometown show off their first tour of the new year; noise-wave metal transplants and bastard sons of goat-pirates Ceramic Duck have descended from the brothel of Lafayette, Louisiana to play; and wrapping up is Flaming Fire (www.flamingfire.com), whose inspired lunacy comes courtesy of New York City, featuring artist/cartoonist Lauren Weinstein.

The FLUKE festival includes the debut of the fourth annual FLUKE anthology including the work of both national and local cartoonists and artists, including locals T. Edward Bak, Patrick Dean, Mary Jessica Hammes and Devlin Thompson, and many more! All attendees will receive a token upon purchase of admission the day of the event to exchange for a copy of the anthology at Bizarro Wuxtry.

EVENT SPECS
Tables and spaces will be provided for mini comic artists and distributors on a first-come, first-serve basis. All attendees are welcome to bring enough work to fill a small (4' x 5') table space. Pretty soon we should have this link up on its own page, but for now, you can

Here's the skinny on the rooms:

A vegan potluck, preview showcase of FLUKE exhibitors and live music (from Lance Simmons, 63 Crayons, Lets Surf and Carrie Nations) all can be yours! And here are some disclaimers on those hotel rooms: All reservations will be made by individual attendees. All room and tax is the responsibility of individual attendees.

Hotel rooms!

Very soon, you will be able to book your hotel room by coming to this web site and clicking on a link. Watch for it!

What's the deal? We've gotten discounted rooms for FLUKE folk at the Holiday Inn, located at 197 E. Broad Street in Athens. It's right in downtown Athens, on the same street as Tasty World, the venue for FLUKE - just a five minute walk (well, depending on how fast you walk, but that's about right). Our discounted room rate is $69 a night, and they're reserving 50 rooms for us Friday night, 50 rooms for us Saturday night and 30 rooms for Sunday. The rooms are a mix of non-smoking and smoking kings, queens and doubles.

You must reserve the rooms by January 13 - after that, the rooms will be released, and you're on your own to find lodging at regular rates.

So keep checking back - we'll have that link up soon!!! And thanks to everyone who made the FLUKE art sale such a pleasant (and successful) experience.

Would you like to send art for the sale? You can drop off your work at Bizarro Wuxtry between noon and 6 pm from Nov. 27-Dec. 10. Or, you can ship it to Bizarro Wuxtry, 197 E. Clayton Street, Athens, Ga, 30601, attn: FLUKE. No work will be accepted after Dec. 10.

If you are shipping your work, you must e-mail FlukeArtSale@gmail.com for a simple agreement that you will need to print, sign and send in with the work. This way, you'll have proof that you've submitted work, and we'll have a record of it too. We'll e-mail you a receipt once we get your art.

Folks dropping off work in person, we'll have an agreement for you to sign. See above for the reason.

And, guess what? Artists donating work will get 50% of the sale from their piece - all the while supporting comics, zines and independent publishing. Hooray! All sales transactions will be processed and profits sent to the artists by Dec. 20.

submission update

Hi dudes! This is Mary Jessica. I'll be doing the PR for FLUKE this year. You also will see me performing trapeze during FLUKE's show at night, if you stick around long enough.

Anyway, a brief l'il update on submissions:
If you want to send submissions electronically, please make sure that those jpegs and tiffs are at least 350 dpi, and, as Patrick mentioned previously, 5.5 (width) by 8.5 (vertical) inches (digest size). We prefer tiffs, though. We also enjoy snail-mailing (does anyone still say that?) CDs of images over e-mailing.

And if you want to just draw something on a piece of paper and send it in the mail, that's A-OK too.

Something important to note: If you don't want us to use any of your work in publicity materials, please let us know. We'd like to be able to give newspapers and magazines images to be printed with any potential articles. This isn't the same thing as you being hired to do illustration work for the newspaper or magazine, so you wouldn't be paid. These images would just be considered to be part of the press materials we'd send out in publicity. If that isn't appealing to you, just let us know that your submission is only for the anthology and no publicity, 'kay?

You can always e-mail us with any questions at flukesubmissions(at)gmail(dot)com.
Thanks dudes, and I'm excited to see everyone at FLUKE! MJ

Submission Question

On the Failure Comics Message Board someone asked whether or not there's a "theme" to the FLUKE anthology. I know that some shows, like SPX, have a theme that their book explores each year. I don't think FLUKE's at that point yet, nor do I know if that something we'd even want to do . Anyway...this is the long boring way of saying no. There's notheme at all, just send us something good. By the way, you should all be aware that this year, unlike previous years, we may have to cut some stuff from the book depending on the amount of submissions. Since our quote from the publisher was based on a certain page count, it won't be as easy as it was in the past to just make the book bigger. Not that we want to leave anyone out (except maybe Partick Dean), but we may be faced with that choice. If we are, we're going to give priority to local artists since FLUKE is a "regional" show, I guess. This doesn't mean that you shouldn't send something in if you live out of state or out of country. Please do. There's still, considering that we've received exactly zero submissions as of right now, plenty of room for everyone.

HEY!

Please read what Patrick wrote below about the deadline for submissions. We're totally serious about the deadline this year, people. Since we're not whipping this thing up at the Kinko's, there' very little leeway. We're dealing with Professionals now! that's one step away from actually being professionals ourselves! How exciting!

DEADLINE SET FOR SUBMISSIONS!

We are now taking submissions for the 2005 FLUKE Anthology.

They can be sent by mail or by email attachments.

FLUKE Website - A little more every couple of days...

Over at the Comics Journal Message Board, Jeff Mason said that the sooner we get this stuff up, the better, and I for one could NOT agree more. The website is totaly bare right now, but you can look for more real information, especially information concerning deadlines and format requirements for the anthology book on here VERY VERY SOON. Keep in mind that the deadline is going to be amazingly shorter and more strict that the deadlines of previous years because we're having the book printed this year instead of staying up until like 6 in the morning before FLUKE Saturday making the damned thing.

Patrick Dean and I will be at Anime weekend Atlanta yelling at people and promoting FLUKE this month, so look for us there. We'll be the ones that have very little idea about what anime even is, much less what we're doing at a festival for it. Hey, we're there because we love Dave. Seriously.
