SPX 2005
Bethesda Maryland
Sept 23-24
This year Wide Awake Press, Top Shelf and The Common Bond joined forces for a trip to SPX. Rented a van and planned on stopping by Foamhenge on the way up.

We made reservations for a 12 passenger van from Triangle and of course they didn't have it when we went to pick it up. But they did have a 15 passenger van that we got for the same price! Come to find out we would have been really cramped with all the luggage and comics that took up the entire back seat.

The 9 person crew packed in like little smelly fish in an aluminum can. J Chris, Jamie, Holly, Duane, Fletcher, Frank, Scott, Rob and Justin (pictured below).

Justin Gammon is the go to man for driving a 15 passenger van. He rocks them hard-core!

The wonderful sign for the Enchanted Castle Studio Tours. It was destroyed years ago by local folks who feared that Mark Cline worshiped the devil. So they set it on fire. When we drove by he was there!! Click for photos of it and other stuff from exit 180 on highway 81 in Virginia.

Scott regales the "Wappies" with tales of his turbulent youth and how he caused Crystal Pepsi to be taken off the market.

Andy Runton ask's Chris Staros and Rob Venditti if they thought maybe he should hand correct the ant on the SPX poster. "I can't believe I left a leg off. The whole poster is ruined!"

Team 8's table glows with the power of graphic design. Calling customers to feed their eyes.

AdHouse Book's Josh Cotter and Chris Pitzer discuss the best way to let J Chris Campbell know how much they really hate him and wished he never existed.

These guys had some of the killerest screen printed comics in the whole joint. Go buy anything by Shawn Chaeng and John Mejias at paping.org

Unfortunately this is the best photo we got of that guy in the badass tin man robot costume. Oh Bummersville.

One of the best moments of the show was when these kids showed up to see Andy Runton. They had a picture made with their stuffed animals next to the Owly plush. Our teeth fell out because of the sweetness.

The fella's quietly wait for the meth to kick in so they can enjoy the show the way it was truly meant to be.

Justin was a trooper and drove the whole trip back. J Chris tried to sketch his various states of driving.

Frank, Scott, Fletcher and Holly demonstrate how to pose for a photograph that will be distributed on the Internet with some sort of witty caption.

The whole gang macks after a nice meal in a private room at Kahill's restaurant. If you look real close you can almost hear the muzac blasting. This place was on an exit out in the middle of Nowheresville. And man was it good! Even with the killer tunes piped in.

I was shocked to see that she stopped someplace other than just my house. Oh yeah!

J Chris Campbell, who is in constant need of attention, caught here in the middle of one of his spastic fits .

Holly, Rob, Jamie, Justin and Fletcher forked out the 12 bucks required to bask in the glory that is the Natural Bridge. One of the 7 wonders of the "new" world.

Jamie and Fletcher demonstrate the magical dance of Foamhenge. But alas the gates did not open and we were forced to view it from the side of the road. Click for photos of it and other stuff from exit 180 on highway 81 in Virginia.

Justin and Duane made up some Wide Awake 666 sneak-previews and gave out a ton to the freebie loving SPX attendies.

The Common Bond's table floweth over with yumminess.

A trenchcoated-bear-masked-artist discovered that he had no problem giving away comics to the friendly SPX crowd.

A J Chris Campbell robot shirt altered to girly perfection!

Mustaches were all the rage this year at SPX. Thanks to Leah Riley's mini "10 Things To Do With a Fake Mustache." Minutes of fun!
